Peter Geffen (Chair)

Peter Geffen is the Founder of the Abraham Joshua Heschel School in New York City and has worked with the school for over two decades. He is also the Founder and Director of Kivunim-Directions, an educational organization running programs for teachers in Jewish schools and university students. Peter has been involved with Arab-Jewish coexistence work since 1964, when he met Nina Denur, who had then just established the first Arab-Jewish dialogue group in Israel. In addition, he was instrumental in the creation of the Abraham Fund when he brought his friends, Alan Slifka and Eugene Weiner, together for the first time, a meeting which resulted in the Fund's establishment. In the 1970's, he designed the first programs to bring Jewish youth into Muslim-majority countries (Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, pre-revolutionary Iran and Turkey), through his work at Park Avenue Synagogue, where he served as Principal from 1967-1985. Peter speaks and writes regularly about the teachings of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, with a particular emphasis on Heschel's message for educators and parents. His background includes involvement in many critical issues of social justice of the past 40+ years, including service as a civil rights activist for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where he worked during the summers of 1965 and 1966.
