On the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, survivor Martha Shem-Tov shared her story of survival with the Al-Iman students. Martha was saved as a child by a Catholic woman named Krisha, who hid her during the War. Martha's mother was killed by the Nazis, and her father survived by using false papers, returning for Martha at the war's end.
Al-Iman Student Ayesha Umer on Stereotypes Against Jews and Muslims

Today in our interfaith class, Yona asked to us to brainstorm a list of stereotypes against Muslims, and then one against Jews. Some of the stereotypes against Muslims were terrorist, followers of a violent religion, suspects of 9/11, anti-feminist, backwards religions, anti-democratic, and resisting of modern life. Some of the stereotypes against Jews were want power/land/money (greedy), enemies of Muslims, running the media and government, religious, united, and unfriendly.

When hearing and discussing these stereotypes it made me think that the people who believe in them are missing out on so much. Some of these stereotypes were very familiar to me and I had actually believed in some of the stereotypes against the Jews, but I now realize that I was lacking communication and was very ignorant to believe that.

After engaging myself in interfaith dialogue my perspective of Jews and Judaism has changed completely. Before, I used to be scared of Jews because I thought they hated Muslims. My first encounter with Jews has happened through Abraham's Vision. I'm very fortunate to be one of those who have the opportunity to do so because this program has done a lot for me. It has for sure made me a much stronger and open person. If it wasn't for this program I would have stayed thinking that all Jews are enemies of Muslims when it's not true at all. When I think about it I just wonder how foolish I must have been to think that. I have realized the importance and necessity of being involved in Interfaith Dialogue. It has clear many of my misconceptions and has put an end to my fears. I am very thankful I am apart of this
program.

Al-Iman Student Amena Umer on Meeting with a Holocaust Survivor ("taught me much more than books have...")

Today in interfaith class we had the privilege to meet Yona’s mom, Martha. She came to visit us from Toronto to discuss her emotional experience during the Holocaust.

Martha was very brave to talk about her experience especially as a Jew, and being one of the survivors. Martha is one of the strongest women I have ever met. I was surprised the way she remembered a lot as a child. Martha’s Holocaust experience touched my heart deeply. I couldn’t believe the things she went through when she was only a baby.

As she was telling us about her experience I was picturing what she must have went through- being thrown out a small narrow window from a train to stay alive, the miracles that had occurred during the event, and the devastating news about losing her mother.

I have never seen anyone gone through something like Martha had. I could just imagine the explosion that had been going on. Hiding and going from place to place from the fear of being killed must have been very hard. Martha was blessed that she had people that supported her and kept her safe.

Martha’s experience has taught me much more than the books have taught me on the Holocaust. I think having a Holocaust survivor coming and talking to you about their experience affects you a lot because you can see that the Holocaust experience has still not overcome them. It made a big difference when Martha came because I have never met a Holocaust survivor. I am very glad, thankful, and lucky to meet Martha.

Thank you for your visit!

Al-Iman Student Ayesha Umer on Meeting with a Holocaust Survivor ("I now know how it feels when someones says whatever happened to the Jewish people during that time was all a lie...")

Today in interfaith class Yona’s mother, Martha, a Holocaust survivor, had come to visit us from Toronto. She first started the meeting by introducing herself. She told us a little about her hobbies, occupation, and about her family. Martha works as a nurse and she loves to travel. She has 2 daughters and 1 son. Her oldest daughter is named after her mother who she lost during the Holocaust. Her main goal on coming to visit us was to share her Holocaust experience.

Martha’s Holocaust experience deeply touched my heart. I was very surprised to hear her go through so much when she was only a baby. It hit me tremendously. I felt as if I was going to tear on hearing her experience. This was my first encounter with a Holocaust survivor. It was amazing having Martha come and share her experience with us. When Martha was telling us about her experience I felt terrible because sharing an experience like that is difficult. She was very strong when she was telling us her
experience.

After meeting Martha I have learned a lot about the Holocaust. I now know how it feels when someone says whatever happened to the Jewish people during that time was all a lie. It really hurts when you were part of that experience and lost the most important and precious thing to you, your mother.

When Yona had told us about how it takes years to read over a million children who passed away in the Holocaust I was shocked. I was surprised to hear that about 6 million Jewish people had vanished during the Holocaust. I couldn’t imagine that the amount of people who died was this high especially the amount of children who vanished. I learned that the Holocaust children survivors who were saved by non-Jews and grew up in hiding... are called the hidden ones.

Martha also showed us pictures she had of her mother, her father, and the Catholic lady who took care of her while the Holocaust. I would love to go to Poland to take a look at the concentration camps and the area. I loved this meeting with Martha but I was upset because we had didn't have enough time. After hearing the experience I was speechless.
